My Dear Jane,

I have really no news to give you. It is marvellous how much satisfaction Willie’s election has given to the whole Church. Large numbers of Salmond’s supporters have sought me out with the express purpose of letting me know how gratified they were with the result of the election. I am quite tired shaking hands. I do not know if there was a single man disappointed except Dr Adam of Glasgow.[2]

Willie has been much sought for. Tonight he showed himself and every body wished to see him and shake hands with him. We have just dined with Miss Sandilands[3] and are invited on Friday to Geo. Philip’s.[4] I hoped to get home on Friday — but I understand a Demonstration is to be made on Friday Evg in the way of a supper on Willie’s honour. In that case I fear I must wait till Saturday.

    We are both well.

Ever your loving

William

Have we not cause for great thankfulness. I hope you are all well. WPS

The election has been absolutely without a shade of disagreeable incident.
